In 1944, the Luftwaffe formed an elite unit of pilots -- the Jagdverband 44 -- to fly the Me 262 in combat. The unit was organized by Generalleutnant Adolf Galland, a popular but obstreperous former flying ace. Galland recruited Experten, the top aces from piston-driven aircraft, to fly the new jet fighters.
